What is SRE?
SRE, or Scripture, is religious education taught from a faith perspective. It allows students the opportunity to learn, discuss and explore how their beliefs can shape the way they live.
SRE is offered in most NSW government schools and the vast majority of students across NSW attend some form of Special Religious Education. SRE classes are run during school hours and – like music, drama and sport – offer an educational and cultural value that contributes to the holistic development of our children.
Many students in Christian SRE are from families who don’t see themselves as committed church members but who recognise the benefits of their children being taught about the Christian faith and worldview at school.

What will my child learn?
Menai Anglican Church co-ordinates Christian SRE across six local public primary schools – Bangor, Tharawal, Menai, Alfords Point, Illawong and Lucas Heights – for children in kindergarten to year 6. Christian SRE is also offered at two local high schools – Menai and Lucas Heights – for children in years 7-12.
Students who opt in to Christian SRE are taught from a curriculum authorised by the Anglican Diocese of Sydney and produced by Christian Education Publications. This curriculum is bible based and seeks to engage students and encourage them to discover for themselves the truths of Christian faith and make good life choices. The CEP curriculum runs over three years and is engaging, inclusive, sensitive, age appropriate and compliant with NSW Department of Education policies.

Who will my child’s teacher be?
SRE teachers are warm, caring and mature Christians who teach from a faith perspective with gentleness and respect.
Every SRE teacher has undergone approved training in bible theology, sensitive issues, group management and Safe Ministry, and holds a valid WWCC.
Each year they are observed while teaching and are required to attend two hours of professional development training to maintain their accreditation.
All SRE teachers, as a condition of their authorisation, are obliged to teach from the authorised curriculum of their religious provider.
Why SRE?
Christian SRE provides a connection between local churches, families and government schools. Enrolling your child in Christian SRE has a number of benefits, including moral and ethical development, character building through exploring Christian values in the bible, and foundations for Christian teaching, traditions and living.
At Menai Anglican Church, our aim is to care for young people as they discover the message of the Bible and engage with Christian faith. Connections made through SRE helps provide families with ongoing pastoral care, community support, and opportunities for involvement with your local church while helping children develop a sense of belonging and identity in both their school and Christian communities.
